IN CONVERSATION WITH: ASSOCIATE DESIGN DIRECTOR, LAUREN LEAR_
AT HOME WITH A.LONDON | January 2025
Our studio are very prideful of our wonderful team, who work together to enrich our portfolio year after year, creating projects across the city that represent creativity and determined ethos here at A.LONDON.
Lauren Lear has been an integral part of the studio since 2016, working across our successful London projects, and she has recently returned to the studio after a year of maternity leave, and we are so excited to have her back!
Read on to learn how Lauren is balancing motherhood with her busy work schedule, what she has missed about A.LONDON, and her dream design project that may or may not include an indoor slide…
Welcome Back Lauren! How does it feel to be back at A.LONDON after your maternity leave? What have you missed most about the creative process?
It feels fantastic to be back at A.LONDON! It’s refreshing to return to such a dynamic and inspiring environment. I’ve truly missed the creative energy that comes from collaborating with the team and bouncing ideas off each other. What I’ve missed most is the challenge of problem-solving through design, and the satisfaction that comes from seeing a concept evolve into something tangible and meaningful.
Has becoming a parent influenced your approach to design or shifted your perspective on interiors in any way?
Parenthood has given me a new perspective on how spaces function - not just aesthetically, but practically. I’ve become more attuned to the idea of creating environments that are both beautiful and deeply functional, especially as I now consider how spaces can evolve with a growing family. There’s a shift toward balancing luxury with comfort and durability, and ensuring that interiors cater to both relaxation and the everyday hustle. I’ve also found myself more mindful of sustainability, since I want to create spaces that are not only luxurious but also responsible for future generations.
What has surprised you most about re-entering the workspace after your time away?
I can’t believe how much I missed it! I know it sounds a bit cheesy, but I truly love my job, and it feels like I’ve gotten a big part of myself back.
Can you share some of the challenges and rewards of balancing motherhood and a leadership role in the design world?
Oh the balance definitely comes with its challenges (nursery sickness bugs are next level!), but there are also unique rewards that make it all worthwhile.
One of the biggest challenges is managing the constant juggle between professional responsibilities and family life. The design world is fast-paced, and in a leadership role, there’s always a need to be deeply involved in both the creative and business aspects of the studio.
At the same time, being a mother requires flexibility and presence, there are days when it feels like I’m being pulled in all directions. However, the rewards are immense. Parenthood has taught me patience, empathy, and the importance of self-care, which I can apply both at home and at work. As a leader, I’ve become more adept at empowering others, delegating, and maintaining a sense of perspective. Having a family has also strengthened my ability to manage time efficiently and make decisions more decisively, knowing how precious every moment is.
On a personal level, watching my little boy grow and develop is just so wonderful! It reminds me of the importance of creating spaces that are not just functional, but meaningful and nurturing. Ultimately, balancing both worlds makes me feel more connected to my purpose—both as a mother and as a designer—and fuels my passion for what I do.
What are the key trends you’ve noticed in the luxury interior design space over the past year? Are there any that particularly excite you?
The transition from the cool, sterile greys to deep, mocha and chocolate browns and rustic oranges has has been such a refreshing shift for me. These tones feel more organic and timeless, with a warmth that invites relaxation and a sense of calm.
Our sustainability journey has always been a core value at A.LONDON. How do you envision integrating eco-conscious design further within your projects moving forward?
As a designer, I see the future of eco-conscious design as being both a creative challenge and a responsibility. It’s not just about using sustainable materials, but about creating entire ecosystems within spaces that prioritise the well-being of both people and the planet.
For instance, incorporating reclaimed wood, natural stone, and eco-friendly finishes that are not only beautiful but have a lower environmental footprint is something we’re already doing, and I want to take it a step further by working with artisans and manufacturers who prioritise sustainability in their entire process, from sourcing to production.
Moving forward, we plan to collaborate even more closely with experts in sustainability, use cutting-edge eco-tech, and continue exploring how we can minimise our footprint without compromising on luxury or design integrity.
What inspires your creativity when designing bespoke interiors for such a diverse clientele?
My creativity is inspired by the unique stories and personalities of each client. Every project is an opportunity to understand someone’s life, values, and experiences, and then translate that into a space that feels deeply personal and authentic. I find inspiration in the small details that define a person’s lifestyle - whether that’s a favourite colour, a treasured art piece, or a particular memory they want to reflect in their surroundings.
I also draw a lot of inspiration from the context of the space itself - whether it’s the architectural style, the location, or even the history behind it. Every environment has a story to tell, and I find that the best designs come from respecting and enhancing the space’s intrinsic qualities, while tailoring it to the client's needs.
Travel plays a significant role in my creative process too. Different cultures and design traditions constantly offer new perspectives and ideas. The way natural materials are used in Japan, the bold patterns of Moroccan interiors, or the pared-back luxury of Scandinavian design - they all influence the way I approach each new project.

What does a day in the life of Lauren Lear look like now, and how has it evolved since you last worked full-time?
Each day is so different! I could be at Chelsea harbour sourcing finishes for a private client, or doing a recce in an area of London where we are pitching for a showhome in a new development, or some days (and nights) its Classic FM and hours on CAD and photoshop.
If you could design your dream space for yourself and your family, what would it look like?
We’re hoping to move this year into a larger family home, juggling family life in a 2 bed central London apartment has its ups and downs. Two parents working from home with a toddler and two cats… we’ve definitely outgrown the space, but I’m trying to make the most of the amazing neighbourhood of Stoke Newington while I can!
Being from Edinburgh however, it’s my dream is to own a grand Georgian townhouse with high ceilings, original details, and all the charm that comes with it! I absolutely love cooking and hosting, so a spacious kitchen and a rich merlot dining room are non-negotiable. As a bit of a historian and a goth at heart, I’m drawn to deep, dark tones and antiques that seem to whisper stories about the lives they’ve had before finding their way into mine.
But here’s the fun part - I’m also determined to have an indoor slide one day. As a kid, I always dreamed of having one, and I’m committed to making that dream come true for my kids! Luckily, my husband is just as big of a kid as I am, so together, I’m sure we’ll create the perfect home for our little family. Stay tuned!
