MUSEUM OF THE HOME WITH A.LONDON_
GUIDES August 2021
Our talented team of designers love to get out and about when looking for inspiration when curating our luxury interior designs. We sat down with Senior Interior Designer, Lauren Colquhoun, to learn more about the team’s day out at Hoxton’s, Museum of the Home.
“…some of the prints were beautifully intricate and wouldn’t look out of place in an eclectic modern interior.”
Can you tell us what Museum of the Home is?
Museum of the Home showcases various collections of homewares and interiors throughout time. There are 3 sections, ‘Making home’ which aims to give a unique insight into what home means to different people, told through personal stories and everyday objects; something we take pride in doing when delivering our award-winning projects. The ‘Living spaces through time’ and ‘Gardens through time’ collections exhibits the evolution of household interiors and personal garden styles throughout the decades. It is located in Almshouses, built in 1714. Almshouses are charitable housing provided to people in need, who belong to a particular community – giving the building so much history to the idea of ‘home’.
Can you describe what you saw at the museum?
Everything from old pieces of technology, like the original Mario Kart on Nintendo, to the first vacuum cleaner. The variety of old household items is amazing. The museum also reveals individual room arrangements which depict the average home in a certain era.
What inspiration did you take away from the day?
I have always looked to the past for inspiration for my designs, so this was absolute heaven to me! Some of the spaces were completely over the top, with wallpaper and patterns everywhere, but if you actually looked past the gaudiness of the overall look, some of the prints were beautifully intricate and wouldn’t look out of place in an eclectic modern interior.
Do you have a favourite era you saw?
Not necessarily a favourite era, but I definitely gravitated towards the grandeur of the 1800s and of course the maximalist over the top pattern clash of the ‘60s and ‘70s interior set ups. The amount of chintz and tat was amazing, but it did make me want to Marie Kondo the room displays.
